1 Month + Before the Move

• Expenses - Keep a list of receipts for moving expenses as they may be tax deductible.
• Have moving company supply you with written confirmation of the moving price; pick up and delivery dates;and insurance coverage (you may need to purchase additional coverage).
• References will help you to choose a trustworthy moving company.
• Arrange for temporary storage if needed and check insurance.
• Banking - Ask your bank to transfer your accounts; order cheques with new address; clean out your safety deposit box.
• Mail - Submit a change-of-address form to the post office and mail forms to applicable people and companies.
• Give your day care centre written notice of withdrawal.
• Contact your doctor for medical records and a referral to a new physician.
• Change your home, auto and medical insurance policies to prefered company in new location.
• Store documents such as school records; home purchase/sale papers; will; marriage/divorce papers; pet documents; financial records; stock certificates; social security cards; birth certificates; and passports in a fire-safe box.
• Notify clubs and volunteer organizations of your departure.
• Cancel newspaper subscriptions.
• Arrange for hotels, rental cars or temporary housing as needed.

2 Weeks Before the Move

• Make a list of unwanted household items and tag them for a garage sale or a charity pick-up.
• Clean out club and school lockers and return borrowed library books.
• Pick up dry cleaning.
• Arrange for the change-over of utilities.
• Take the measurements of the rooms in your new residence and decide where you want your furniture to go.
• Begin packing less-used items.
• Number and label each box, and keep an inventory.
• Retrieve and return all borrowed items from neighbors & friends.

1 Week Before the Move

• Create an inventory of your carry along items.
• Stow valuable and irreplaceable items, such as jewelry and heirlooms, on your person.
• Finalize arrangements and dates with moving & storage companies.
• Confirm arrangements with auto and pet transportation companies; hotel (temporary housing), rental car companies.
• Defrost and clean out your freezer.

1-2 Days Before the Move

• Purchase traveler's checks for trip expenses.
• Close bank accounts (unless you will be using another branch of the same bank).
• Finalize financial matters relating to the sale or lease of your home.
• Movers will complete the packing of your home.
• Ensure that all boxes are clearly marked.

Moving Day

• Confirm delivery address, directions and delivery date with the movers.
• Communicate with the foreman of the moving crew and make sure that your instructions are understood.
• Clean the garage, shed and yard before leaving.
• Turn off appliances, close windows and set the temperature at a comfortable level.
• Arrange to leave forwarding address, keys, and garage door openers with the new occupants.
• Make sure that Gizella can contact you if your home is going to be vacant (she will need the keys!).
• Notify your insurance agent that the home will be empty.
• Clean the garage, shed and yard of your new home before moving in.

 

Arrival Day

• Do a walk-through with Gizella to ensure that everything is working properly.
• Supervise moving crew on location of furniture and boxes. Begin unpacking necessary items first - basic kitchen utensils, bath toiletries, etc.
• Carefully check over the Bill of Lading from the moving company (check for damaged items first), as this is a legally binding document.
